शालेय इंग्रजी – १

नुकत्याच इंग्रजी शिकू लागलेल्या विद्यार्थ्यांनी इंग्रजीचेही इतर वाचन करावे अशी अपेक्षा असते. याबाबत इंग्रजी मातृभाषक विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी बरेच साहित्य उपलब्ध असते. पण मातृभाषा इंग्रजी नसणार्‍या विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी ते विविध कारणांनी फारसे उपयुक्त ठरत नाही.

मराठी माध्यमातील माध्यमिक शालेय विद्यार्थ्यांचेच उदाहरण घेऊ, कारण त्याच काळात इंग्रजीच्या खर्‍याखुर्‍या आणि सविस्तर अभ्यासाची सुरुवात होत असते. असे असले तरी बहुसंख्य मुलांचा शब्दसंग्रह मर्यादित असतो, कारण बरेचदा केवळ वर्गात शिकतानाच त्यांचा इंग्रजी भाषेशी संबंध येत असतो. हे लक्षात घेता इंग्रजी मातृभाषकांसाठी लिहिलेल्या पुस्तकांपैकी पूर्वप्राथमिक किंवा प्राथमिक शालेय विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी उपयुक्त पुस्तकेच निवडावी लागतात. पण माध्यमिक शालेय विद्यार्थ्यांचे वाढलेले वय, अनुभवविश्व आणि गरजा लक्षात घेता ही पुस्तके काहीशी सपक ठरतात, असे माझे मत झाले आहे. मी इंग्रजी शिकू लागलो तेव्हा माझी अशीच भावना झाल्याचे मला निश्चितपणे आठवते.

इंग्रजी-भाषक माध्यमिक शालेय विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी लिहिलेली पुस्तके निवडावी, तर अपुरी शब्दसंपत्ती व मर्यादित वाचनानुभव यामुळे असली पुस्तके वाचता वाचता बहुसंख्य मुलांची दमछाक होते, असे माझे मत आहे. मी विद्यार्थी असताना मलाही हाच त्रास होत असे. हे खरे की हाताशी चांगला शब्दकोश असेल, आणि एखादा मार्गदर्शक पाठीशी उभा असेल, तर चिकाटी असणारी मुले यातूनही मार्ग काढतात. पण ते अपवाद म्हटले पाहिजेत. बहुसंख्यांचे काय? या उच्चस्तरीय पुस्तकांमुळे ही बहुसंख्य मुले इंग्रजी वाचनाकडे वळण्याऐवजी ते टाळण्याचीच शक्यता अधिक. आणि ते धोक्याचे आहे.

विद्यार्थ्यांना वाचनाला प्रवृत्त करण्यामागे शब्दसंपत्ती जोपसणे हा हेतू तर असतोच. पण अन्य हेतू हा, की त्यांना भाषेच्या विविध प्रकारे होणार्‍या चलनाचा, वाक्प्रचारांचा परिचय व्हावा. त्यासोबतच असा विविध प्रकारे मांडलेला मजकूर समजून घेण्याची प्रक्रिया त्यांनी अंगिकारावी. याच सोबत, वर्णिलेली परिस्थिती समजून घेताघेता त्यांचे अनुभवविश्व विस्तारावे, हाही हेतू असतोच. वर दिलेल्या सर्व समस्या टाळून हे विविध हेतू साध्य करण्यासाठी काय करावे?

इंग्रजी वाचनाला सुरुवात करताना अशा माध्यमिक शालेय बहुसंख्यांना त्यांच्या अनुभवविश्वाला साजेसे छोटे परिच्छेद वाचायला देता आले तर उपयुक्त ठरेल असे वाटते. बरेचदा या प्रकारचे साहित्य जाणीवपूर्वक लिहावे लागते. तो माझा प्रांत नाही. त्याऐवजी माझ्या वाचनात आलेले मुलांना वाचनीय वाटतील असे छोटे परिच्छेद खाली दिले आहेत. सदर परिच्छेद हे रीडर्स डायजेस्ट मधील “As kids see it” या सदरातून निवडलेले चुटके आहेत. संदर्भांचा उल्लेखही केला आहे.

इथे हेही नोंदवले पाहिजे की अशा नियतकालिकांमधील विविध सदरातील लिखाण हे मुदलात प्रौढ वाचकांसाठी असते, मुलांसाठी नसते. त्यामुळे मुलांना चालेल व भावेल असे लिखाण शोधावेच लागते. त्याचा हा एक प्रयत्न! हे परिच्छेद भारतीय मुलांना वाचनीय वाटावे यासाठी इष्ट ते किमान संपादकीय बदल केले आहेत. मात्र काठिण्य पातळी राखली आहे. मराठी मातृभाषक विद्यार्थ्यांना इंग्रजी शिकवणार्‍या पालक/ शिक्षकांना हे साहित्य उपयुक्त ठरेल असे वाटते. त्याचबरोबर या परिच्छेदातील मजकूर समजून घेता घेता विद्यार्थ्यांना आपले अनुभवविश्वही विस्तारण्याची संधी मिळेल असा विश्वास वाटतो. मात्र त्यासाठी त्यांना थोडे मार्गदर्शन करावे लागेल.

हे साहित्य कसे वापरावे? मुलांना गोष्ट म्हणून सांगावे की वाचायला द्यावे? हे पालक/ शिक्षकांनीच ठरवावे. कुठल्या वर्गात हे साहित्य वापरावे हेही त्या पालक वा शिक्षकांनीच ठरवले पाहिजे, कारण आजमितीला आपला पाल्य वा आपले विद्यार्थी कुठल्या पातळीवर आहेत याची जाणीव त्यांनाच असणार आहे. त्याचबरोबर आपल्या विद्यार्थ्यांच्या गरजा लक्षात घेऊन हे परिच्छेद सोपे करण्याचे स्वातंत्र्यही अर्थातच संबंधितांना घेता येईल. पण या संधीचा वापर करून मुलांची शब्दसंपत्ती व अनुभवविश्व वाढवायचे, तसेच इंग्रजी भाषेच्या चलनाचा परिचय करून द्यायचा, की मुलांना वाचनाकडे वळवण्यासाठी परिच्छेद सोप्या इंग्रजीत मांडायचा या बाबतचा निर्णयही वापरकर्ते पालक/ शिक्षकच घेऊ शकतील.

या साहित्याचा आपण बिगरव्यवसायिक शैक्षणिक वापर करू शकता. पण त्याअगोदर इथे नाव नोंदवा. हा प्रयत्न कसा वाटला ते जरूर कळवा. आणि उपयुक्त वाटला तर तसे नक्कीच कळवा. मग या धर्तीचे अन्य साहित्य शोधता येईल.

Disturbed

Five year old Nayantara sat very upset in her little chair. Her grandfather was busy surfing the internet nearby.

Suddenly, he heard her stern voice saying, “Don’t disturb me!”

Taken aback, he replied politely, “I am doing nothing that will disturb you. I am not even talking to you.”

“I get disturbed”, Nayantara replied, “When nobody talks to me”

How big a thought

Thirteen year old Dattu was excited to learn his aunt had sent a cheque to his mother to buy Diwali gifts and presents for him and his younger brother.

As his mother held the cheque in her hand, Dattu craned his neck to see the cheque. But the mother hid it, saying, “It is the thought that counts!”

“I know”, Dattu replied, “I just wanted to see how big the thought was!”

Heaven or hell?

Seven year old Jayant’s dog, Tommy, had been deaf and blind for years. But Jayant and his parents looked after him. As Tommy grew old, he became very sick and was about to die. Jayant’s mother explained to him what is going to happen to Tommy.

Jayant asked, “Would Tommy go to heaven?”

Mother said, “Yes. In heaven he will be healthy again and able to do his favourite thing, chasing squirrels.”

Jayant thought about it for a while and said, “So dog heaven must be same as squirrel hell!”

Even older

Ten year old Jayu was visiting his grandmother, over the weekend. He wanted to stay at her house, and asked her if he can.

Grandmother said, “Not this weekend Jayu, maybe next weekend. I am very tired. You know I am old and I get tired.”

“But Grandma”, Jayu protested, “Next week you will be even older!”

Tied it up

While going to school in the morning, seven year old Sheela found a puppy in the school playground. She liked it. So she telephoned her mother and asked, “Mom, can I bring it home?”

Mother said, “If it is still there when you return from school, we will see what we can do.” Mother had assumed the dog will be gone by the time the school closes.

At noon, Sheela walked into her home with the puppy cradled in her hands.

Mom said, “Oh, the pup was still there?”

“Of course,” Sheela replied. “I tied it up.”

Touching feelings

Four year old Tanuja and five year old Tanmay were playing outside. Suddenly, Tanuja came in crying. Between sobs, she said Tanmay hurt her feelings.

Tanmay in earshot, came around the corner and stated adamantly, “I did not! I never touched her feelings.”

So sorry

Soon after his new school year began Ashwin was promoted from junior KG to senior KG. Ashwin wanted to know why he was in senior KG and not junior KG.

His mother explained to him that he had passed his examination, so he was promoted.

“My God! In that case our Kala teacher has failed. She is still in junior KG!

Awful long time

Six year old Dinesh was visiting his grandfather, who was in the hospital. Soon a nurse came to check his pulse. She held the patient’s hand, and kept looking at the watch for 60 seconds.

Dinesh was watching the whole operation quietly. As soon as the nurse finished, he exclaimed, “It takes you an awful long time to tell the time!”

Send me mail

Gotya’s grandfather and grandmother were going on a tour. Gotya and his parents went to see them off, and wish them a happy journey. When leaving them, Gotya’s parents requested their parents to send e-mail regularly.

Gotya also reminded them, “Send me a mail too, saying – “Dear Gotya, we bought you a gift.”
